Turn It Up, America

Music playing She stepped off a plane with a second handbag Passport shaking like a toner flag Eyes full of stories pockets full of dust Hearts saying run but her feet said trust On the other side of town in a small time bar Let's stare and add a folded star He's seen fire, he's seen sand Prayer to the freeway glow There's a current in the ground Saying go, go, go Turn it up, America Let the engines roar For the kids with bigger dreams Than the town they're from before For the ride to speak our minds For the roads that never end We get knocked down hard as hell But we get back up against Turn it up, America Shake the sky and stream From the mountains high to the broken mills From the desert wind to the winter chills There's a waitress working on a nursing degree A farmhand writing songs No one's heard for free We got bad news screens and crooked suits But I've seen strangers share their last pair of boots When the flood comes up in the sirens Well, it's the neighbor with the truck Prayer in downtown fight Keep the fire in the furnace And the flag in the night Turn it up America Let the speakers bleed For the ride to chase a life Nobody else can read For the mountains, planes and waves For the cities burning bright We're allowed Cause hope is in the handshake On the edges to the rivers in between Where a million different stories and one restless dream Let the engines roar for the ones who crossed an ocean Just to knock on this front door For the doubters and believers For the broken and the brave We're all scribbling our names on the same unfinished page Turn it up America Till the night turns white With the thunder and the bleachers With a little porch light If you're looking for a chance to rewrite
